Petco Park in San Diego, the home of the Padres, is the farthest MLB Park in California

…and the answer to last week’s Buster for the Upper Grades:

Marlins’ Stadium is 2,587 miles from AT&T, farther than any other National League Park

And the Brain Buster for this week:

Check back next week for the answers!

Back to School.

Dear Alexander Valley School Families,

Welcome to the 2011-12 School Year at AVS. We are so excited to begin the new year!
Please make a point to join us at Back to School night, at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, August 16th. You’ll have a chance to meet your child’s new teacher and hear all about all the coming year has in store for you and your child. Children are expected to attend Back-to-School Night with their families, so that everyone hears the same information.

We have some exciting things in store for our students this school year. As many of you may know by now, Colleen Flores is our new third grade teacher, filling the opening created by Peggy Maddock’s retirement. Our teaching staff has been working this summer on our writing program, as we are planning on having Writers’ Workshop in each classroom this year. You’ll hear more about that when you meet your child’s teacher. We have also been working on our Wednesday afternoon enrichment program, fine-tuning those offerings, and developing new classes for our students. We will share more information at Back to School Night.

We are happy to let you all know that we have a part-time Library and Media Center Assistant working in our library this year. Our Board of Trustees also voted to extend our Kindergarten day to 3:00 all year long. We’re excited about the additional learning opportunities that this will provide our youngest students. Our Board also made changes to our After-School Care Program, increasing the fee to $8 an hour, and limiting the day to 5:00 PM. Rising costs have also caused us to increase the charge for lunch to $4.50, and increase milk to 50¢ a carton.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School Night, on the 16th, and on the First Day of School on August 18th.

Thank you.

Welcome to the 2011 Alexander Valley School 6th grade promotion

I’d like to express our collective gratitude to every one of you in the audience, parents, family, teachers, aides, and friends, who have had a role in these students’ successful journey so far.

I say, “so far,” because there are many more miles ahead, many more celebrations and graduations, as well as many more challenges for these young people. This is happy moment, to be sure, and we’ll celebrate today, but each of these folks has a long road still before them.

And thinking about that, I wondered what I might say to them. If this is my last chance to say anything to them, what advice might I give? I want them to remember some lessons from AVS.

First of all, remember on your journey ahead to be generous. Be generous with your time and energy. You will have many opportunities to give just a little bit. Seize that opportunity, because it may be a huge gift for someone else.

And remember the power of your words. When you speak with kindness, with honesty, and with compassion, your words are a powerful force for good. The hurt that can be caused with unkind or thoughtless speech is often irreparable.

Don’t forget that every time you do anything, you have a chance to influence the well being of everyone around you. Do what you can to make your community and world a better place for everyone.

Remember, too, that as you go through life, you are always a part of a larger whole. Your actions always influence the well being of all those around you; your school, your team, your family, and your community. Hold that thought close, and choose actions that have a positive impact.

I know that if you all remember these lessons we’ve been giving you for seven or so years, you will be successful. You will be happy. And most of all, as you continue on your journey ahead, you’ll make our world a better place. And that’s what it’s all about.

Thank you.
